Expect Middle Creek Wildlife Management area offers photographic opportunities in all seasons. The area is laced with trails for hikers of all ability, most of them easy to moderate. There is a section of lake open to non-motorized boating in season. There are forest, farmland, meadow, lake, and other habitats that draw diverse species. March 1 through October , a tour route is open to vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Potential sightings include bluebirds, American kestrels, tree swallows, coopers hawks, bald eagles, bobolinks, eastern wood pewees, kestrels, indigo buntings, red bellied woodpeckers, American pipit, ruby crowned kinglet, wood duck, and American widgeon. White tailed deer, coyotes, red foxes, raccoons, and opossums may be seen in person or on the web cam.
The charismatic Greater snow goose and the stately Tundra Swan use Middle Creek as a stopover for spring and fall migration. Spectacular displays of geese are viewable at the park and on the Middle Creek WMA webcam during migration times. Migration timing varies with the weather and time of year, occurring some time between Late January and March. Expect huge crowds, especially mid -day and on weekends. Sunrise and sunset offer the best photo opportunities and thinner crowds. Willow Point is a great location for sunrise shooting, because the sun comes up behind the geese and bathes the lake in red light. You might have better luck on the auto loop or on the roads surrounding the park if you are visiting mid-day, as the geese are typically feeding in the adjacent corn fields at this time. Migration updates are posted throughout the spring snow goose and tundra swan migration to help you time your visit for maximum enjoyment. |
